5 years' experience of tutoring in mathematics. I am a former college lecturer. I am also designing my own web site for learning mathematics. It is important that learning is "active", that the student is solving problems, etc. "Passive" learning - e.g. listening to a teacher, watching a video etc. does not give rise to long term memorisation of the subject material. Of course the tutor must give explanations when the student does not understand, but this should be as small a part of the tutoring process as possible. "Overlearnig", whereby the student continues to practise something he has already mastered is also important. "
